Exodus 19: The exodus transition of the Israelites is from subservience to one king to subservience to another, that being God. This is basic to our human experience. We are never fully self-determined, but instead putting ourselves under different kings/gods. God calls us to be under his care and rule because it brings us down the path of life, instead of down the path of death.

Exodus 17.1-7: The wilderness is a place of thirst. But to understand this passage, we must see the interaction between physical thirst and soul thirst. At the depth of our soul, we are thirsty for the presence of God - of connection to our Creator. In response, God stands among them, giving them water for their body and water for their soul.

Exodus 16: As Israel is led into the wilderness, the fight begins against the slavery from within. The slavery from without has been dealt with in God's triumph over Pharaoh. Now, the battle for the souls of Israel begins. This begins with learning to trust God and his daily provision. Like Israel, this is our battle too. Daily trust in the Lord and his provision in Jesus Christ.

Exodus 13.17-14.31: The climactic story of the Exodus narrative is the Red Sea crossing - the Old Testament's resurrection story. As Israel goes through the waters of death to life on the other side, so to do we in Christ as he conquers the grave. Easter is a day of victory, but it is a victory that goes through death. Praise God that Jesus has gone before and leads us down the path to victory.
