Sermon: The Patriarch – After All Those Years
Genesis 21.1-7: How do we gain access to the laughter of Sarah in our own lives? This laughter that does not merely reside in that moment of joy nor in that place, but this laughter that resonates across history and the entire earth? This is the joy of salvation come and also of salvation coming. It is the joy of not merely the newborn Isaac, but of a newborn hope for all mankind. This is the laughter we seek that transforms our lives from that of tragedy to comedy in the purest sense.

Sermon: The Patriarch – A Prophet in Training
Genesis 20: Abraham has just received from the Lord the promise of a son within a year. And in response to this, we find Abraham doing a deeply foolish thing and putting it all at risk. What are we to learn from this? How is God faithful in the midst of it? And how does it instruct how we, as Abraham's children, are to live?

Sermon: The Patriarch – A Warning for His Children
Genesis 19: We look at the story of the judgment of Sodom and what message it brings to us as the people of God. It serves as a warning and a call to deep drive to holiness and prayer for the presence of evil in our world. May Christ have mercy!

Sermon: The Patriarch – In the Council of God
Genesis 18.16-33: After a message of hope, the LORD's visit brings a message of judgment. Abraham stands in the middle of this as he is brought into the knowledge of God's plans. We see God preparing Abraham to know how to be a true representative of the message of God to the world. One part is a call to holiness and a second is serving as intercessors that the world might respond to God's mercy in Christ.

Sermon: The Patriarch – Hospitable to God’s Coming
Genesis 18.1-15: After long years of waiting, the LORD appears to Abraham and gives news of fulfillment finally coming. It is a mysterious encounter, but one that speaks life into a hopeless situation. The call for us to be hospitable to the visitation of God in our lives, which involves growing by the Spirit within, that our hearts might be in the light rather than be of darkness.

Sermon: The Patriarch – Cut at the Heart
Genesis 17: In forming Abraham's identity closer to himself, the Lord commands Abraham to the act of circumcision. This serves as a sign of Abraham and Israel's identity and reminds them that our source for life is always in God and not ourselves. The pain of the act reminds us of the coming pain that our Lord would take upon himself that we might be free from sin and live our life for him.

Sermon: The Patriarch – New Names
Genesis 17: After Genesis 16, where the lower plane of Abraham's life shows itself, God appears to Abraham in Genesis 17 and calls him to the higher plane again - to the purposes of heaven, not that of earth. God provides new names that represent his design and he calls Abraham to live blamelessly, especially following the disaster of Genesis 16.

Sermon: The Patriarch – The God Who Sees: Part 2
Genesis 16: In this messy story, we come to know the God who sees us, both in our suffering and in the suffering we bring to others. We can both identify with Hagar, but also must consider our patterns of Sarai. Only then are we truly honest before God and can find both his comfort when harmed, but also repentance when acting as the inflictor of harm. Both must draw us to Christ, who frees us in our sin and also in our hurts.

Sermon: The Patriarch – The God Who Sees: Part 1
Genesis 16: This part of the Abraham story is not often dealt with. It highlights less than ideal attempt by Abram and Sarai to secure the promises of God. But in seeking this, they repeat the error of Genesis 3 when Eve and Adam grasped for the forbidden fruit. This is the pattern of life on our lower plane that continuously must be redeemed by God in his grace.

Sermon: The Patriarch – Inheritance of the World
Genesis 15: God's promise to Abraham has two parts to it, a son and the land. Today, we focus on what the promise of the land is about and how it is understood as the history of God's redemption moves toward Christ.
